History

So how did we get to here……

In 1984 the company took over the operations of the former Shetland Line business and commenced containerised freight sailings between Aberdeen and Lerwick in Shetland.  The service was expanded in 1987 to include a call at Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands.  During 1989 the company diversified to offer a wider range of transports and logistics services including haulage, distribution and warehousing, concentrating largely on the door-door market in Scotland.  By 1990 the company had opened its own depot in Glasgow, creating a ‘one-stop-shop’ for English and Scottish Central Belt customers seeking transport and distribution solutions for groupage, pallets, part-loads and full loads, throughout Scotland.  1995 saw the development of purpose built offices and yard space at Blaikies Quay in Aberdeen where the Group remains headquartered today.  During 1996 a new depot facility was developed at Garthspool in Shetland to service the growing northern isles market.  In 2003 the business diversified again, opening an International Freight Division offering freight forwarding services and through a network of partners, global import and export services.  By 2005 the Glasgow depot required expansion and the business relocated to the current facility at Bellshill, giving 15,500 sq ft of space and fantastic trunking connections through the motorway and rail networks.  2006 saw the business increase its vessel size when the MV Daroja with capacity of some 290 TEU was taken on charter to operate the Northern Isles seafreight service.  By 2007 the Group’s rolling programme of investment had seen the stock of line owned container equipment top 700 x 20ft containers with specialised units including half-heights, flatracks and purpose built bulk containers. A modern fleet of heavy lifting and cargo handling equipment is also in place. In May 2008, the Group bid for and won the public service contract to operate container freight services to Orkney and Shetland giving the service ‘lifeline’ status for the islands. The contract runs to 2014 ensuring stability of schedule and pricing for island customers.  During 2009 the company opened a new purpose built Orkney depot on a prime two acre sight at Hatston in Kirkwall.  In 2011 the Group won the freight contract with Orkney Islands Council for the receipt of goods, handling, storage and onward distribution for the outer isles of Orkney.

Today, in early 2012, the Company is bidding to secure the contract for the delivery of the lifeline passenger, freight and livestock services to and from Orkney and Shetland.
